JCI members voted to select which topics would be chosen for each 2014 JCI Area Conference.
The JCI World Public Speaking Competition is a JCI Program that focuses on developing and showcasing JCI members’ ability to share ideas on important local, national and global issues. Participants are challenged to exercise their public speaking skills, clearly express creative ideas and captivate an audience of peers.
JCI members use their public speaking skills in local meetings, reaching out to media and working with local partners as they collaborate to create positive change. In this competition, participants practice a skill that will support their local efforts to encourage all sectors of society in their community to Unite to Impact.
Each year, representatives from JCI National Organizations compete at JCI Area Conferences to become the JCI Public Speaking Champion of their Area. The same as the 2013 Area Conference competitions, all of this year’s participants will compete in a preliminary round, and the three top performing competitors will move on to a final competition. Based on feedback received from judges, participants and delegates of the 2013 JCI Area Conferences, starting in 2014, the preliminary and final rounds of competition at the 2014 Area Conferences will use different topics, making for a more dynamic competition. The Area Conference Public Speaking Champion will be announced during the JCI Awards Ceremony at the end of each Conference.
The 2014 JCI Area Conference topics were chosen by JCI members in each Area through an online survey, taken by nearly 350 people. JCI members had the opportunity to rank their top choices from a list of seven topics. All competitors will speak on the second most popular topic for each Area during the preliminary competition, and the top-scoring topic will be the theme that the three finalists in each Area competition will speak on.
